How To DUPR
Understanding DUPR: Your Pickleball Rating Explained
If you've been playing pickleball at Matt's Pickle & Padel and haven't set up your DUPR rating yet, now is the perfect time to get started. Here's everything you need to know.
What is DUPR?
DUPR (Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating) is the world's most widely used pickleball rating system, with over a million players tracked globally. Ratings run on a scale from 2.00 to 8.00: beginners start around the 2.0–3.0 range, most recreational club players land between 3.0 and 4.5, and elite professionals like Ben Johns sit up near 7.2. It's the same system used at every level of the game, from Matt’s Pickle and Padel all the way up to the pro tour.
Starting From Scratch
No rating? No problem. All new players start as "NR" (Not Rated). Getting your first rating is simple — all it takes is playing and logging one official match. You can self-report recreational matches right through the DUPR app, or play in a club event where results are submitted automatically. Prefer a little guidance first? DUPR-certified coaches (we’ve got them at Matt’s) can also evaluate your level in person and assign you a provisional rating to get the ball rolling.
How Does Your Rating Move?
DUPR uses a performance-based algorithm that compares your actual results to what's expected based on your current rating. Beating higher-rated opponents gives your rating the biggest boost, but playing frequently and against a variety of players is what builds an accurate, reliable number over time. It's also worth knowing that singles and doubles ratings are tracked separately, so you could have two very different numbers depending on where your game is strongest.
Why It Matters at Matt's
We're committed to making sure our events and programming reflect the real skill levels of our members. That's why we'll be using DUPR ratings as a guideline for leveled play going forward, and why we're hosting DUPR-recorded events to help everyone get their matches logged.
So, it doesn’t matter whether you're brand new to the rating system or looking to climb the proverbial pickleball ladder. Matt's is here to support your game every step of the way.
